Westfield Boulevard & North Meridian Street Connectivity (sidewalks/crosswalks/traffic calming)

The Central Indiana Community Foundation engaged with Midtown Indianapolis, Inc. (formerly HARMONI) to take Phase I to the next level of planning. Meetings were held with the Department of Public Works and Indy Parks to ensure that the City would cooperate if a plan were developed to calm traffic and improve connectivity and access to the park and the towpath.  With that agreement, Midtown and CICF invested $65,000 to complete the next phase of planning.

The MPO awarded Midtown an 80% federal planning grant of $120,000 to complete Phase I planning to the point of becoming “shovel-ready.”  Further, Midtown was awarded $390,000 in Transportation Enhancement Grant funding for construction.

Completed projects:

  • Sidewalks on 56th Street from Washington to Illinois
  • Sidewalks on both sides of Meridian from 54th to 57th
  • 4 way stop at 56th and Delaware
  • Federal Transportation Enhancement Project

 

Projects underway:

  • 54th Street and Meridian trafffic light
  • Sidewalks throughout the Park through ReBuild Indy
  • Federal Transportation Enhancement Grant application

Future Projects

  • Canal overlook on Westfield connecting the Park to the Canal Towpath
  • Sidewalks, curbs and parking spaces on Westfield along Park to Illinois

A public hearing was held on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at the Riviera Club for the initial focus areas surrounding the Meridian Street and Westfield Boulevard area. The purpose of the project is to provide pedestrian connectivity and safety, traffic calming while maintaining traffic flow, and neighborhood district identity.
