Envisioning Breakout Groups – 38th & College Avenue / 38th & Illinois Street
1. Draw a line around the commercial area on the aerial photograph. Explain your decisions.
2. Think about yourself as a pedestrian in this area. What kind of experience would you like to have there? How would you ensure that this area is pedestrian friendly?
3. How could this area be equipped to support business development? What would incent a business/developer to want to invest there?
4. Decisions about new construction:
Design restrictions? Architectural style?
How many stories high?
What is on the street level?
Lighting, parking, etc?
Sidewalk width, streetscape details? Describe.
Unique aspects of this area?
Transit readiness?
5. Make a drawing of one block or corner (or more, if you have time) in this area. It can be as detailed as you like. You can decide wheat buildings are there, what businesses, restaurants, services are there. Be as specific as you can possibly be.

Brief overview
Visual Preference Survey
Photos of Short North / Discussion of qualities of neighborhoods
Envisioning Breakout Groups
- As a group, review the notes from last month’s session. List ideas you especially liked that apply to the area that surround Tarkington Park.
- Consider the purpose/potential roles of Tarkington Park. In your ”environment,” what activities could happen there: What is the park designed to accomplish?
- As you walk through the park, what should be your ideal experience?
- How could the park encourage the surrounding area “mixed use” ideas that have been previously recommended by the groups? How could the park help an expanded residential/business district thrive? Be as specific as possible.
- Look again at the aerial photograph, and think about your approach to a park design, considering the purposes that you have identified above.
Consider:
Entrance/access by pedestrian
Bicycle/automobile/transit access
Recreation
Public events
Landscape/architecture/buildings
Creation of an “inspiring place”
Year-around use?
Other ideas?
